You see all the races of ALO are various types of fairies, so flight is a basic requirement in this mix of Norse Mythology and fairy lore. While that game only allowed you to fly in certain areas and often within a time limit, Lost Song lets you take to the skies with only a stamina bar and an altitude limit. There has only been one other game that I have ever played that features aerial combat that didn’t rely on a suit or a jet and that was the MMO Aion. This is exceptionally usefully with one of Lost Song’s coolest features, flight. There is a somewhat brief tutorial that you can do to get acquainted with the controls and the way things work in Lost Song. There are plenty of nuances that reinforce the MMO structure vibe, but I’ll touch on those later. It’s really kind of a Meta experience as you are a gamer playing a game as a character that is a gamer that is playing a game. This is one of my favorite things about the Sword Art Online game franchise as both a lover of anime and MMOs. Much like RE: Hollow Fragment, you don’t start at Level 1 but rather at Level 100 maintaining the illusion that you are playing a VRMMORPG, or Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Role-Playing Game, and that the game has been running for some time. You goal with the aid of Kirito’s friends is to be the first to clear ALfhiem Online’s new expansion, Svart ALfhiem. Lost Song isn’t without its mystery though especially with the introduction of some all-new characters including the virtual reality studying scientist and pop idol Seven, her bodyguard Sumeragi and a mysterious red-headed girl. This time things aren’t as life and death as with the SAO and Kirito gets to enjoy the game with his girlfriend Asuna and little sister Leafa as well as all the rest of his friends including Sinon a player from Gun Gale Online.

Sword Art Online: Lost Song picks ups after the events of Aincrad in Sword Art Online comes to a close where Kirito free from SAO and being the gamer that he is dives into yet another VRMMORPG, ALfhiem Online. It will help greatly if you are fan of the show/manga as you will have a greater appreciation for the characters, their experiences and even the in-jokes found within Sword Art Online: Lost Song.

So am I saying that Sword Art Online: Lost Song is a title that no one will understand or enjoy? No, in fact it’s quite the contrary as Lost Song as brought some definite improvements and a few faults to the series and is actually rather enjoyable. Sword Art Online is one of those series that, no matter the media it’s presented in, will either suck you in with its complex characters and story or leave you feeling that you will never grasp just what it’s really all about. If that has your head spinning, then it’s true what they say about Sword Art Online. Things in RE: Hollow Fragment and Lost Song go so far as in their execution to make entire arcs of the show/manga non-existent yet still bleeding characters/events like Leafa and Sinon from the second and third arcs of ALfhiem Online and Gun Gale Online. This newest entry actually follows the continuality of RE: Hollow Fragment which greatly differs from the show/manga story arcs after the series’ first arc. Sword Art Online: Lost Song much like its predecessor is set in an alternate timeline from the show and manga respectively.

Sword Art Online: Lost Song is the sequel to the PS4 release of Sword Art Online RE: Hollow Fragment released here in the States earlier this year. There had to be some sort of miracle this year that I get the chance to review two games based off an anime that I love let alone ones about Sword Art Online in one year.
